New York and Abu Simbel – Two different worlds

Maybe after the pyramids or the same level of tourist attractions is the largest and most beautiful ancient temple in Egypt, one from Abu Simbel, built south of Aswan situated on the west bank of the Nile. Archaeological complex consists of two temples cut directly into the stone during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II. It was built in the thirteenth century BC, in order to intimidate rivals and to commemorate the famous battle of Kadesh.

In Egypt, the temple is called “Hwt Ramesses Meryamun”, meaning “Temple of Ramesses, beloved of Amun”. The facade is 33 meters high, stretches 38 meters and is “guarded” by four statues of Ramses, each 20 meters high. Statue of left entrance was destroyed by an earthquake, leaving intact only the bottom. At the foot statues are some small figures he depicts Pharaoh family: his mother Tuya, his wife Nefertiti and their two children. Beyond the statue is an ancient rebus, showing the name of the head of Ramses: “Waserma’at”.

In front are jagged images of 22 monkeys with guns pointed at the sky, is supposed to pray to the sun. Another important feature is the monument facade wedding scene with the daughter of King Ramses III Hattusili, the marriage brought peace between Egypt and Hittite. The remaining details and legends about the famous monument, under the aegis of UNESCO, remains to discover the site.
